Best Hiking Trails to Elope in Newfoundland

Newfoundland has some of the most amazing hiking trails in Canada, and offers such an intimate experience with nature. You won’t find the same crowds here as you will in the more popular tourist areas! This means when you elope in Newfoundland, you will have a much more calm and private experience, having incredible views all to yourselves in the serene wilderness with many options for coastal views, waterfalls, ancient appalachian mountains, forests and unique geological features.

Here are some of my favourite hiking trails here in Newfoundland that I recommend to my eloping couples as a Newfoundland elopement photographer:

1) Torbay Point (Cobbler’s Path)

Torbay Point is a gorgeous meadowy area on a long point that juts out into the sea with sea cliffs all around. The views are absolutely amazing here, and it’s one of my favourite places to elope in Newfoundland! Just a 10 minute walk through the forest on the East Coast Trail will lead out onto a flat area with plenty of space to play, and a path with stairs that leads you down further and further out onto the point. This trail can be a bit popular in the summer, but the farther you go out onto the point, you will have more and more space to yourself, and the views just get better. This is also an amazing place to see whales in June and July!

This is a great trail to elope in Newfoundland because it has amazing views without an intense hike, there is plenty of space to enjoy without feeling like other hikers are intruding, and there is a lot of variety in the trail.

2) Green Gardens

This is the longest hike on my list at 16 km round trip, but it is SO worth it. This stunning hike in Gros Morne National Park goes through forest and over the mountains, through meadows of wild sheep, to reach a secluded bay with sea cliffs rising all around. This would make such an amazing Newfoundland elopement adventure!!

This hike is a great place to elope in Newfoundland as it includes a full day hiking adventure, and is quite secluded, especially outside of the peak months of July-August.

3) Spillar’s Cove

Spillar’s Cove is another one of my absolute favourite hikes on the island. Located just around the corner from the town of Bonavista, full of artisan shops and great restaurants, Spillar’s Cove was actually the filming location for Never Never Land in the recent Peter Pan movie. If that doesn’t tell you everything you need to know right there, this incredible hike winds around the edge of some epic sea cliffs and the sea stacks around them. At sunset, the sun hits the sea spray and makes the most surreal and beautiful experience!

This would be such a gorgeous area to elope in Newfoundland because these gorgeous sea stacks are a bit of a local secret, with most hikers looking over Spillar’s Cove for the more popular Skirwink Trail in Port Rexton. Spillar’s Cove is definitely the more beautiful area in my opinion, and the quieter trail makes for a more intimate experience.

4) The Tablelands

I can’t keep my cool when I talk about the Tablelands. These are mountains formed from the earth’s mantle, from a tectonic plate that FLIPPED OVER. It is one of the coolest and most unique landscapes in the whole world! The rocks are rust-red and totally surreal, located on the South side of Gros Morne National Park. I loooove spending time here. There is a shorter 2 km trail that leads into the valley and a river, or there is a more intense hike that leads up into the mountains for some incredible views! This is definitely one of the most unique elopement destinations in the world.

I love The Tablelands as a destination to elope in Newfoundland, because the uniqueness of the landscape lends such a an exciting sense of wonder to your elopement experience. This side of Gros Morne also includes some other great trails to explore during your elopement trip!

5) Bottle Cove

Located in the Bay of Islands just around the corner from Gros Morne National Park, Bottle Cove is another location on the list that is very dear to my heart. This beautiful little cove has a gorgeous sandy beach surrounded by mountains, and an incredible hiking trail. The trail first leads through some fern-y forest to a cliff up above the beach that the locals call “Sunset Rock” because it is an incredible place to watch a sunset, and from there the trail heads through a wildflower meadow and out to a lighthouse.

Bottle Cove is an amazing location to elope in Newfoundland because it truly has a little of everything. Mossy forest, beach, mountains, and a longer hike if that is what you’re looking for.
