Newfoundland Wedding Photographer

Hi folks, I’m Heather! I’m a Newfoundland Wedding Photographer and I’ve been photographing weddings in St. John’s and beyond for 13 years. I show up with a documentary approach and a deep sense of listening. I love to help my sweet couples plan their weddings in an intentional way, focused on creating an experience that allows you to be fully present with your people.
Today I’ve gathered some of my favourite wedding venues in St. John’s for a relaxed intimate wedding based on different vibes and priorities! Let’s dig in!
Best Wedding Venues in St. John’s for Your Intimate Wedding
1. O’Brien’s Farm
capacity: package one: 40, package two: 125
ideal for: outdoor weddings
vibes: charming cottage garden party

First on the list for a reason – O’Brien Farm is a truly stunning haven of green in the middle of the city. Relaxed garden party vibes, beautiful heritage buildings like Thimble Cottage mixed with the modern Kitchen Barn, and gorgeous old apple trees (which have stunning blossoms in the spring FYI). O’Brien Farm is my absolute favourite St. John’s wedding venue – check out a full wedding gallery here!
2. My Flatrock Dwelling
capacity: 24 seated indoors, 50 indoor standing, 80 outdoors
ideal for: intimate dinner wedding, backyard wedding
vibes: artful archiecture and light indoors, forest meadow outdoors

This beautiful Airbnb, designed by SAM design inc, is such a beautiful space just outside the city. A gorgeous house with wide open spaces for gathering full of artful architectural details, and a big open yard nestled in the forest for outdoor ceremonies. Perfect for a backyard wedding or a cozy intimate dinner – or both!
3. Dvele Inn
capacity: 14 in dining room
ideal for: very intimate dinner wedding
vibes: modern moody victorian mansion

While we’re on the subject of Sam Design, the Dvele Inn in the historic Georgetown neighbourhood just outside of downtown is an absolutely stunning spot for a small, intimate wedding. The design in this unique boutique hotel is so unique and beautiful, with moody interiors in jewel tones with art wallpaper, velvet and brass. It is such a vibe!
4. Bannerman Brewing
capacity: 100 standing, 80 seated
ideal for: cocktail-style events
vibes: nordic white and pine meets industrial

If the more luxe vibes of the last two aren’t your thing, Bannerman Brewing has a more cozy, clean white and wood nordic vibe and some of the best locally brewed beer around! Located right downtown on the east side of Duckworth street, this space has plenty of light and a sweet fireplace for colder season celebrations!
4. Murray’s Garden Centre / The Grounds Cafe
capacity: 100
ideal for: indoor intimate weddings
vibes: plant-lovers paradise

This truly *beloved* brunch spot has recently starting taking bookings for intimate weddings and I am so excited! I have always loved the beautifully lit interior of this space, with wood panelled walls, vaulted ceilings with tons of light, and greenery absolutely overflowing. This sweet space is all set up for a meal-centred wedding, or the tables can be cleared for standing space.
5. The Merchant Tavern
capacity: 100 seated, 150 standing
ideal for: classy cocktail party style reception
vibes: for some reason I think of the 1920’s in this space

If really good food is a priority for you, The Merchant Tavern, opened by Chef Jeremy Charles and Sommelier Jeremy Bonia, is a great option! Located in a reimagined historic bank on Water street, this place has a uniquely sophisticated, modern vibe.
more amazing options for top tier food in smaller spaces: Rabble, Portage, Grotto, and Terre
6. The Well Room
capacity: 100 seated, 150 standing*
ideal for: a great space for mingling!
vibes: historic building, exposed brick and hardwood

The Well Room (formerly known as The Rocket Room) is a beautiful top floor space above the historic shops on Water Street. It features a ton of character: exposed brick, natural wood floors, and victorian character. *A word of caution though: the room is quite narrow, so it feels crowded well before reaching capacity, especially if there are many tables or chairs set up.
